In this offering, we get up close and personal with Nolan and Rys from the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania based band This Mortal Mountain.
The first record I ever bought with my own money was…
Nolan: Nihiliste(s) by Celeste on transparent red vinyl. I didn’t even own a record player, I’d just started purchasing physical music and had no idea vinyl could be made like this and impulse bought it because I love Celeste.
Rys: Oh jeez. I think it must have been a Rise Against album – Long Forgotten Songs (their B sides). I originally got a record player sometime in high school and I was big on Rise Against back then.
The record that made me want to make music was…
Nolan: Dookie by Green Day. I was 13 and just discovering music and they made it seem like such an absolute blast to write and perform songs like that.
Rys: Somewhere at the Bottom of the River Between Vega and Altair by La Dispute and The Cartographer by The Republic of Wolves.
The record I’ve played more than any other is…
Nolan: The Martyrdom of a Catastrophist by Junius. Another record that made me want to make music. Gotta get my hands on the remaster.
Rys: Probably Humanz by Gorillas or I See You by the XX. I was really excited when those came out.
The record that always makes me feel good is…
Nolan: Tres by Mouse on the Keys.
Rys: The Cartographer by The Republic of Wolves. I just love them so much and met them at Warped Tour when I was a senior in high school. Nolan also paid to have a private concert from them and it was so intimate and beautiful because they were just playing in his living room. Much love to all of them!
The record I turn to when I’m feeling down is…
Nolan: Blazing fires and helicopters on the front page of the newspaper. There’s a war going on and I’m marching in heavy boots. by Suffocate For Fuck Sake. Absolutely cathartic.
Rys: Any of my La Dispute ones. I really want their newest one (Panorama) on vinyl and CD for my car. 🙂
The record with my favorite cover art is…
Nolan: L’Un Sans L’Autre by Mihai Edrisch. When you pull the inner sleeve out it’s the cover art flipped, so that you have two hands reaching for each other but they can never touch.
Rys: That I own? Somewhere at the Bottom of the River Between Vega and Altair by La Dispute (there’s definitely a pattern forming here). I have the newest ltd. edition one and the new bird design is really cool. I’m a fan of birds.
The strangest LP I own is…
Nolan: On actual vinyl, I’d say maybe YT//ST by Yamantaka // Sonic Titan. It’s a solid mashup of disparate influences, but doesn’t come off quite as cohesive as their later stuff.
Rys: I really don’t own anything strange. I think I used to have an LP of like religious sermons that I gave to someone to sample from.
The rarest LP I own is…
Nolan: Reality Vs the Optimist by Kiss Kiss, signed. I think in total there’s only ever been 200 of this record on vinyl.
Rys: A signed copy of The Cartographer by The Republic of Wolves. I have it displayed next to my Bottom of the River one on my mantle.
The last LP I bought was…
Nolan: Fyra by Suffocate For Fuck Sake, alas that got delayed at the plant, so I haven’t received it yet to spin it.
Rys: Somewhere at the Bottom of the River Between Vega and Altair by La Dispute (ltd. edition color vinyl).
