What #MetalBandcampGiftClub means to me

Frank Santorelli By now, most people in the world of metal twitter know the origin of #MetalBandcampGiftClub and what it is all about. I want to focus on what it means to me personally. It’s more than just a hashtag. it’s the embodiment of what the human spirit can be all about: making someone happy in a world full of sadness.

I’ve always been a person who loves to give. I enjoy making people happy. No matter my mood, I feel good knowing (or at least thinking) that I’m making someone smile. So when the #MetalBandcampGiftClub movement started I was all in. I started gifting to people I was already following on twitter. They would send me a gift. Other folks started following me, both on twitter and on Bandcamp. The giving continued, and still is to this day.

What if I were to tell you that the giving/receiving isn’t my favorite part. You want to know my favorite part of #MetalBandcampGiftClub? It’s the regular, daily interaction with many of these new people who I am now following. The metal community on social media is becoming closer. In real life I am a loner. I have very few friends. Twitter has become my hangout while I’m drinking a glass of scotch and petting my puppy, JD. You all have become my friends. That may sound silly to some, but to me, it’s been a great experience.

My happiness comes from tweeting with all of you, even if it’s just an exchange of “good mornings” to each other. It’s not just talking about metal either. There have been interactions about movies, sports, politics and real life happenings. Hell, there was even a fun, friendly debate about olives. A few days back someone close to me passed away. So many people sent me great words of support. I was so thankful and humbled by the gestures of love. #MetalBandcampGiftClub is only over a week old and it’s brought me, and countless others, close together. That is truly awesome!

Eventually the gift giving will slow down, but the friendships will continue to grow. A few months ago I was thinking about ending my twitter experience. Now I want it to go on forever. I just want to thank you all for being the most awesome people I’ve had a pleasure to interact with. You have been so wonderful to me. I hope I’ve been the same to you. May #MetalBandcampGiftClub live forever, may #NiceMetalTwitter live forever, and may you all continue to smile. HAIL to you all!
