Polish black metal influenced band Mord ’A’ Stigmata are releasing this three track beast at the end of September through Pagan Records. It isn’t the fast and harsh black metal, more of the slower slightly atmospheric approach. And pushing ten years old the band have already released a terrific piece Ansia plus two previous albums and this is the follow-up.

It is well thought out and executed and there are many styles included, even a funky baseline midway through opener “The Mantra of Anguish,” which did catch me unawares. However the many other styles fit far more from the slow droning rhythms to the crashing cymbal crescendos and synth outros.

“Those Above” starts with a far harsher attack from the start acting as a wake-up call just in case you had drifted off in the sound scape. I find some black metal too repetitive throughout an album, but Mord’A’Stigmata aren’t afraid to experiment and bring in differing even contrasting elements to their sound, including a midway breakdown here acting as a pause for thought before upping the ante again for the faster outro.

“Our Hearts Slow Down,” the title piece is the shortest at only 5 minutes, but the slowest and still it breaks down creating a rhythm to die for with jazz style exploratory drumming before the guitar joins in with something akin to grungy stoner going through a black dis-harmonic filter.

Interesting indeed.
