After the soft introduction of the minute long ‘Fangs’, the first song ’Black Hash’ kicks in like top quality Primal Scream. This is a one man band affair of John Stromshed, from Sweden, and it belts you like screaming psychedelic fuzzed rock should. It has the urgency of punk, as most tracks are around 2 minutes, as well as the stoned fazed glory of late 60s California, or the resurgent psyche rock of the early 90s.
This isn’t a new album, as it was originally self-released in 2013, but is now available as a proper cassette by Medusa Crush, and hurry as there’s only 100 being made!
The first few tracks fly past me as if I’m hanging out the window of the Dodge Challenger in Vanishing Point, but we do slow down a little with the beautiful reverb slack instrumental of ‘Teeth’ and the biker rock swagger of ‘Born to Die’. It invokes all those leather clad rockers your parents warned you about – The Stooges, MC5, Spitfire as well as recreating the heat, dust and sounds of freewheeling freedom of the psychedelic superhighway!
The set closes with Hendrix’s ‘Bold as Love’ nailing his vivid colours to the mast!
