Grey Heaven Fall: Black Wisdom

Grey Heaven Fall - Black Wisdom album coverSome of you may know that I really do not listen to that much black metal. I don’t have anything against it. I grew up listening to bands like Mercyful Fate and Venom, but to me they were more like satanic bands that played thrash metal and not what I consider black metal to be. I guess I just never really gave it a fair chance.

That is until the last six months or so, getting into bands like Mgla, Yellow Eyes, Vaee Solis and the subject of this review, Grey Heaven Fall.

Grey Heaven Fall are my kind of black metal, more along the lines of Oranssi Pazuzu. Hailing from Podolsk, Russia, the band consists of Arsagor (vocals/guitars), SS (bass) and Pavel (drums). Black Wisdom is the bands second full-length (the first was 2011s …Grey Heaven Fall) and fifth release overall.

The first thing that you will notice when listening to Grey Heaven Fall are the vocal stylings of Arsagor. His voice is gravelly, but not too dry. It has just the right amount of gurgle to it. Secondly, the music. All three members of Grey Heaven Fall played together in the now defunct band Comatose Vigil. These guys are tight, and their sound is evilly honed to a tee.

The lead track, “The Lord is Blissful in Grief,” kicks things off in high gear with a slow, mounting fade in that screams chaos… and that is exactly what you get. Destroyed!

I don’t want to give too much away, as there are many more magical moments to be enjoyed while listening to Black Wisdom. One more thing though, closing track “That Nail in a Heart” is more blackened death metal than anything else, and the last four minutes of the song definitely have a post-metal feel. It is my favorite song on the record.

Grey Heaven Fall are a black metal band, and one of the best bands I’ve discovered in months.

On a side note, Necto Nikak over at Aesthetics of Devastation did a remarkably wonderful job of packaging up the CD and making sure I received it in mint condition. Thanks dude. Nice presentation too!
