Best of 2016 Ken’s Favorites

Kim & Ken holding hands Goodbye, good riddance and FUCK YOU, 2016.

While I begin writing this, I am overcome with a rush of emotions. To say that is was a rough year for my family would be an understatement.

As some of you already know, my wife of 20 years and my best friend and soul mate of almost 30 had a heart attack and nearly died during a scheduled open heart surgery to replace a defective valve. She would end up having two more open heart surgeries (three total over three days), and then flat line several times in the days that followed, two of those times while myself and our two teenage children were in the room.

In the weeks that followed, days seemed to never end. Time pretty much stood still. She spent 21 days in the CICU (Cardiac Intensive Care Unit) in a drug induced coma, while 16 different drips, two cardiac machines and a heart pump helped keep her alive and her heart beating as close to a normal sinus rhythm as possible, until it was strong enough to beat on its own.

Grey Heaven Fall: Black Wisdom

Grey Heaven Fall - Black Wisdom album coverSome of you may know that I really do not listen to that much black metal. I don’t have anything against it. I grew up listening to bands like Mercyful Fate and Venom, but to me they were more like satanic bands that played thrash metal and not what I consider black metal to be. I guess I just never really gave it a fair chance.

That is until the last six months or so, getting into bands like Mgla, Yellow Eyes, Vaee Solis and the subject of this review, Grey Heaven Fall.

Grey Heaven Fall are my kind of black metal, more along the lines of Oranssi Pazuzu. Hailing from Podolsk, Russia, the band consists of Arsagor (vocals/guitars), SS (bass) and Pavel (drums). Black Wisdom is the bands second full-length (the first was 2011s …Grey Heaven Fall) and fifth release overall.

Vodun (or Voodoo) is a West African religion that centers around the vodun spirits and other elements of divine essence that govern the Earth, a hierarchy that range in power from major deities governing the forces of nature and human society to the spirits of individual streams, trees, and rocks, as well as dozens of ethnic vodun, defenders of a certain clan, tribe, or nation.

Vodun (the Band) are a weird, spiritual trio hailing from London, England. The band consists of Ogoun on drums, Marassa playing guitar and Oya, the high priestess of unearthly chants and more handling vocals. Serpentskirt: Spirit Race

Serpentskirt - Spirit Race album cover Date Released: 02/02/2016
Label: Independent
Album Type: EP
Album info: Bandcamp

After dropping a handful of demos, Candace Miller (baritone guitar/vocals) and Devlin Goldberg (drums/vocals), the two-piece better known as Serpentskirt, have released their debut EP, Spirit Race.

Hailing from Brooklyn, New York, Serpentskirt juggle elements of the occult with doom undertones and cover them nicely in a blanket of witch rock.

“Little Poison” kicks things off with a gentle, yet gritty riff. One of the first thing you’ll notice are the beautiful vocals. I’m not sure who is singing lead, Candace or Devlin, but it really doesn’t matter. “With Wolves” keeps things going with a similar vibe, and a slightly heavier mid song guitar riff picks up the pace a bit.
